WordPress has ended its year-based default theme naming convention and introduced Ipsum, a deliberately minimal theme designed as a blank canvas rather than a showcase of platform capabilities.

Today, WordPress Ended a 16-Year Tradition… Meet Ipsum!

A significant shift in WordPress's design philosophy took shape today with the unveiling of Ipsum, the proposed default theme for WordPress 7.2. The move marks the end of a 16-year naming tradition that had defined the platform's visual identity.

The platform is abandoning the year-based naming scheme that produced Twenty Ten, Twenty Twenty, Twenty Twenty-Five, and the recently planned Twenty Twenty-Seven. Instead, WordPress will assign individual names to future default themes and update them based on design needs rather than calendar years.

Introducing Ipsum

Ipsum represents a departure from the elaborate showcase themes of previous generations. The theme takes its name from lorem ipsum, the ubiquitous placeholder text used across design disciplines, and embodies a philosophy of intentional restraint.

Built with blogging as its foundation, Ipsum functions as a neutral starting point for customization. The design employs measured typography, dotted-underlined links, and style variations that allow users to modify page appearance and imagery. Features like headers, hero sections, and sidebars remain available but unobtrusive.

WordPress reports that every current style combination meets WCAG AA accessibility standards. However, this minimalist approach wasn't the original plan.

The Path Not Taken: Mētis

Earlier in development, WordPress was building a more ambitious default theme called Mētis. Designed for writers, makers, and thinkers, Mētis took a more expressive approach. Rather than starting with Figma mockups, the team constructed actual demonstration pages within the WordPress Editor to showcase Gutenberg's expanded capabilities.

The project underwent a strategic pivot following a review with WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg. According to the WordPress Core announcement, Mullenweg directed the team toward a simpler blank-canvas approach that could reach a broader audience more effectively.

Mētis will continue as a separate theme but won't be included in this release. Ipsum now stands as WordPress's proposal for the WordPress 7.2 default theme.

A Fundamental Rethinking of Purpose

Default WordPress themes have historically served dual purposes. They provide users with a functional website immediately after installation while simultaneously demonstrating the capabilities of contemporary WordPress design. These objectives often conflict.

A showcase theme demands personality, compelling layouts, distinctive typography, and innovative ideas—elements that inspire designers to discover new possibilities. A starting point, conversely, should remain unobtrusive and facilitate user customization.

Ipsum clarifies WordPress's new direction and poses a more fundamental question: should the default theme of the world's largest CMS inspire users, or should it recede into the background? WordPress appears to be embracing the latter approach.

Twenty Twenty-Seven's Brief Existence

The timing of today's announcement underscores the magnitude of this shift. As recently as September 9, WordPress's official 7.2 Release Squad announcement referenced the upcoming default theme as "Twenty Twenty-Seven." An official Twenty Twenty-Seven: Team Announcement had even been published earlier in the development cycle. One week later, WordPress is proposing Ipsum instead and explicitly abandoning year-based nomenclature.

The year-based naming tradition originated with Twenty Ten, which launched alongside WordPress 3.0 in 2010. Over the following years, this naming convention became so ingrained in WordPress culture that future default theme names seemed predictable years in advance.

Going forward, WordPress states that default themes will carry distinct names and will be updated according to design requirements rather than the calendar. This approach potentially extends individual theme lifespans and eliminates the pressure to release a new flagship design simply because another year has passed.

Ipsum Remains a Work in Progress

An important qualification accompanies today's announcement: Ipsum is not yet complete. WordPress describes it as a proposal for the next default theme, with the current release representing design work to date. Formal development review remains pending.

The team is releasing Ipsum now to enable designers and developers to test functionality, identify issues, and report missing elements while modifications remain possible. The timeline for this feedback window is compressed.

According to the WordPress 7.2 schedule, beta testing commences in October, with the final release targeted for December. Ipsum could continue evolving, but the broader strategic shift announced today is unmistakable.

After 16 years of Twenty Something themes, WordPress is charting a new course. The platform isn't simply renaming its default theme—it's reconsidering what a default theme should accomplish.
