Monotype Honors 53-Year Veteran With Custom Typeface at Retirement
Pat Lightizer, who spent more than five decades at Monotype and its predecessor, received an unusual parting gift: a display font bearing her name.

While most departing employees receive a farewell gathering and perhaps a timepiece, Pat Lightizer's retirement from Monotype came with a distinction few can claim: the company created an entire typeface in her honor.
Lightizer began her career at Compugraphic Corporation in 1973 immediately after finishing high school, taking on the role of type clerk during an era when fonts were manufactured on filmstrips and validated using dedicated typesetting machines. She remained with the organization through decades of transformation within the typography sector, ultimately becoming Monotype's employee with the longest tenure.
The Lightizer Typeface
Monotype unveiled Lightizer, a bold display typeface christened after the retiring employee, to commemorate her departure. The design draws inspiration from Compugraphic's early digital rendering of a condensed Clarendon style, bridging the typefaces Pat encountered at the start of her professional journey with the contemporary tools she is now leaving behind.
The completed Lightizer typeface incorporates OpenType alternates and delivers multilingual support spanning 360 languages.
Lightizer functions as a compact, heavy-weight display option suited for headlines, signage and promotional materials—meaning Pat's name may appear across posters and digital properties well into the future. After more than five decades contributing to the organization, there may be no more fitting departure than becoming a permanent entry in the company's typeface collection.
