Microsoft Brings AI-Powered Document Creation to Office Through Copilot Chat
Microsoft has rolled out three new AI capabilities within its Copilot assistant for Office applications, enabling users to generate spreadsheets, documents, and presentations directly from the chat interface.

Microsoft has extended its Copilot AI assistant into the Office suite, positioning it as a collaborative tool for working with documents, spreadsheets, and presentations while delivering refined outputs. The rollout began Monday for participants in Microsoft's Frontier program, which includes commercial Microsoft 365 Copilot subscribers as well as those holding Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscriptions.
The expansion introduces three distinct AI feature sets across Office applications:
- Agent Mode in Copilot for Excel
- Agent Mode in Copilot for Word
- Office Agent
Agent Mode in Copilot for Excel can use formulas and more
Excel's AI agent operates independently to examine datasets, apply formulas, and construct fresh visual representations of spreadsheet information. According to Microsoft, the system leverages OpenAI's most recent reasoning models, dynamically selecting between different models including GPT-5 depending on task requirements.
Microsoft provided this sample instruction in its announcement: "Run a full analysis on this sales data set. I want to understand some important insights to help me make decisions about my business. Make it visual."
To access Agent Mode in Copilot, users must activate the Excel Labs add-in. Currently, Agent Mode operates exclusively through web browsers, though Microsoft indicates desktop availability will arrive shortly.
Agent Mode in Copilot for Word can create to-do lists based on documents
Word's Copilot functionality allows for document condensation and targeted data extraction, Microsoft explains. When Agent Mode is engaged, the system can refresh data tables, produce action items derived from project documentation, or implement modifications throughout a document.
Microsoft refers to this capability as "vibe writing," though the functionality resembles the kinds of recommendations that GPT-5 generates for subsequent actions. The advantage lies in Agent Mode's integration directly within Word, potentially streamlining workflows for Office users who rely heavily on the platform.
Similar to its Excel counterpart, Word's Agent Mode presently functions only in the web environment. Microsoft has confirmed that desktop support will follow.
Do you like to work in the chat window? Office Agent in Copilot adds functionality
Complementing these features is the Office Agent within Copilot, which Microsoft developed in response to user interest in a chat-focused work methodology. Users can generate PowerPoint presentations or Word documents directly within the Copilot chat interface using Office Agent.
The sophisticated reasoning abilities embedded in the underlying AI models enable Office Agent to produce more comprehensive reports compared to outputs from earlier language model generations.
To activate Office Agent in Copilot, navigate to the navigation pane within the Copilot web application and select Office Agent (Frontier).
