Viral robot videos often feature machines that perform backflips and dance routines. Yet the true measure of a robot's value lies in whether it can close blinds, assist someone with eating, or help scratch an itch. For individuals living with severe mobility limitations, such capabilities represent pathways to greater autonomy. Hello Robot engineered Stretch specifically to address these kinds of everyday assistance needs.

At TechCrunch Disrupt 2026, Hello Robot CEO and co-founder Aaron Edsinger will present Stretch 4 on the Real World AI Stage during a session titled "Come, Meet Stretch. The Robot Built for Real Life, Not a Demo Reel." The live demonstration brings physical AI from research environments into practical application, illustrating what becomes possible when design prioritizes utility, safety, and accessibility.

Stretch 4 entered the market in May, and its initial manufacturing batch sold out shortly thereafter. While much of the robotics sector pursues humanoid designs, Hello Robot has chosen an alternative path: a wheeled, compact platform equipped with a telescoping arm built to operate within human-centered environments and execute practical functions.

Engineering for genuine utility

Stretch 4 operates without requiring legs—it moves on wheels. It accomplishes manipulation tasks with a single telescoping arm rather than dual appendages. The robot maintains a footprint small enough to function in spaces built for human occupancy, while incorporating sensors, perception systems, and tactile sensitivity that enable safe interaction with people.

These engineering choices gain significance when observing actual applications. Individuals with severe mobility impairments utilizing Stretch technology have regained the ability to feed themselves, operate window coverings, and address physical discomfort independently. TechCrunch recently documented a user with quadriplegia who employed Stretch to consume a protein shake, manage his eyeglasses, and perform dental hygiene.

This represents a fundamentally different standard of achievement compared to polished demonstration footage. During Disrupt, attendees will observe Stretch 4 operating in real conditions and learn how Hello Robot approaches physical AI for shared human-robot environments.

The roboticist building Stretch

Throughout his professional trajectory, Aaron Edsinger has concentrated on creating robots intended for human collaboration. Prior to establishing Hello Robot, he founded Meka Robotics and Redwood Robotics, both acquired by Google in 2013. During his tenure as robotics director at Google, Edsinger oversaw business operations, product strategy, and technical advancement of two major robotics initiatives while advising senior management on broader robotics direction.

His background encompasses the complete spectrum of robot product development, spanning human-robot interaction, user experience design, mechanical and industrial engineering, manufacturing processes, software systems, real-time control, robotic appendages, hands, and humanoid platforms. This accumulated knowledge now informs Hello Robot's mission: constructing a robot optimized for actual human use rather than anthropomorphic appearance.

Stretch 4 represents Hello Robot's latest advancement toward this objective. According to the company, the current generation incorporates six years of insights gathered from customers and includes a comprehensive, open-source software framework intended for researchers and developers pursuing robotics and embodied AI applications.

Disrupt 2026 details
