Top VCs Maintained Dealmaking Momentum in Q3 Despite Pullback in Mega-Rounds
Leading venture investors sustained or accelerated their investment activity in the third quarter, even as overall funding declined without blockbuster AI financing announcements.

Prominent venture capital firms kept pace with or ramped up their deal activity during the third quarter, bucking a broader slowdown in startup funding that saw fewer headline-grabbing mega-rounds for artificial intelligence companies. According to Crunchbase data, the bulk of the most prolific venture investors in Q3 closed more transactions than they had in the prior quarter, a group that encompasses established powerhouses including Andreessen Horowitz, Insight Partners and Sequoia Capital.
The most active lead investors similarly accelerated their deal flow in the recent quarter, though the largest capital deployers among them appeared to allocate fewer dollars overall. The seed-stage investing landscape remained relatively stable, with top-tier seed funders maintaining their established positions.
Most active venture investors
When examining the most prolific investors across post-seed rounds, Y Combinator emerged at the top with 45 deals. The well-known startup accelerator typically ranks prominently in these metrics due to its practice of participating in subsequent funding rounds for companies it has incubated.
Following Y Combinator were Andreessen Horowitz, Insight Partners and Sequoia Capital. Across the broader landscape, at least 22 investors participated in 10 or more documented venture rounds during the quarter.
Busiest lead investors
In terms of lead investor activity across venture rounds, Insight, Andreessen and Khosla Ventures took the top three positions, leading 18, 16 and 12 rounds respectively. Three additional investors—Valor Equity Partners, Sequoia and Atreides Management—each led 10 deals in Q3.
Spendiest lead investors
Examining which lead investors deployed the largest aggregate capital in Q3 reveals a different ranking. Valor and Atreides tied for the top position, each leading or co-leading deals valued at $7.7 billion during the quarter. The two firms overlapped on at least six transactions, including Crusoe's $3.9 billion Series F and Positron's $375 million Series C.
Andreessen Horowitz and Nvidia followed, with $6.5 billion and $6.3 billion in led or co-led Q3 transactions respectively. Andreessen's total was driven primarily by a $2 billion round for Cognition and a $1.7 billion financing for Atoms. Nvidia's largest contribution came from a $5 billion round for Safe Superintelligence.
Seed investors
Seed-stage investing remained active throughout Q3. Y Combinator dominated this category by a significant margin, participating in at least 221 documented seed rounds during the quarter. Antler ranked second with 31 reported seed investments, trailed by LvlUp Ventures and Rebel Fund, which each participated in 24 and 23 deals respectively.
Overall, another busy, AI-driven quarter
The data across all active investor rankings demonstrates that the third quarter remained a period of robust startup funding activity, with artificial intelligence companies driving the preponderance of deal volume. Established firms continue to dominate most categories, yet certain investors are noticeably expanding their investment footprint, particularly Atreides and Valor, which have substantially increased their activity in recent periods.
