Clay Labs Inc. has announced a $115 million Series D funding round that values the artificial intelligence-driven sales productivity startup at $7.1 billion. Wellington Management anchored the round, with participation from Alphabet Inc.'s CapitalG fund, Sequoia, Meritech, and other backers. The valuation represents a $2.1 billion increase from the beginning of the year.

How Clay Automates Lead Generation

A substantial share of sales team effort goes toward identifying prospective customers. Clay's platform leverages AI to handle this work automatically. Sales professionals can describe their ideal customer profile in a conversational interface, and the system retrieves matching prospects. For instance, someone at a cybersecurity firm could instruct Clay to locate security specialists employed by large corporations.

Beyond basic company information, the platform identifies business events that could signal sales opportunities. A packaged goods company, for example, might use Clay to pinpoint retailers that have recently expanded their store footprint.

Consolidating Data From Multiple Sources

Clay's system enriches lead information by pulling from over 200 external data providers. Typically, sales organizations must negotiate separate agreements with each vendor, a process that can impede scaling efforts. Clay consolidates these connections into a single contract, simplifying procurement and integration.

Enriching lead records with third-party data presents operational friction. Salespeople traditionally must manually query each external database individually to gather relevant information. Clay's Waterfall feature removes this burden by systematically checking external sources in sequence until locating the needed data.

Ranking and Refreshing Leads

After compiling requested lead records, Clay ranks them according to revenue potential, weighing variables like organization size and recent corporate developments. The system continuously updates the dataset as fresh information arrives.

AI-Powered Outreach and Customization

Clay's embedded AI generates personalized outreach messages for identified prospects. When a prospect shows engagement, the platform assists in crafting customized presentations, including visual materials. The system can also produce follow-up communications and promotional content.

The platform allows customers to build AI agents that combine Clay's various automation capabilities to execute complex, multi-step sales workflows. Users can also configure how agents structure and deliver the lead information they gather.

We started by aggregating the best data for B2B companies. Then we built the infrastructure to run any personalized campaign on top of it. Now we're building agents that can help grow your company for you.
