Campfire Software Inc., which offers a cloud-based enterprise resource planning solution, unveiled a $35 million Series A funding round on Tuesday. Accel served as the lead investor, with participation from Y Combinator, Foundation Capital, Capital 49, and a collection of angel backers comprising technology industry chief financial officers. The company had previously closed a $3.5 million seed round.

Enterprise resource planning, or ERP, systems serve as the backbone for corporate accounting operations. Campfire's platform distinguishes itself by enabling organizations to complete certain financial processes several days ahead of alternative solutions. This capability has allowed the startup to attract customers away from established competitors, including Oracle Corp.'s NetSuite division.

Platform Architecture and Core Features

At the heart of Campfire's offering lies a general ledger—a unified repository storing data on sales transactions, expenditures, and other accounting entries. The platform permits users to establish optional sub-ledgers for tracking items like accounts payable.

Most organizations maintain financial records across disparate systems. Campfire addresses this fragmentation through integrations that let accounting professionals automatically feed data into the platform. Finance teams can pull expense information from corporate card systems or revenue figures from Salesforce, for instance.

Organizations operating multiple business units face additional complexity when each maintains its own accounting records. Campfire supplies consolidation functionality that merges subsidiary ledgers into a unified view. The software handles scenarios where different subsidiaries transact in varying currencies.

Once financial information is organized, accountants leverage Campfire to perform consolidation—the verification process ensuring accounting records are sound. The platform then allows locking of records to safeguard against modifications that could compromise data integrity.

AI-Powered Interface

The platform supports two interaction modes: traditional point-and-click navigation or engagement through Ember, an AI chatbot. Ember enables users to query financial datasets using conversational language. An accountant might instruct Ember to pinpoint which products generated a sales surge at a specific location, for example.
