Musk's xAI Expands Colossus Data Center to 2-Gigawatt Scale With Third Building
xAI has secured a third facility to support its sprawling Colossus AI training complex in Memphis, pushing the company toward one of the world's most powerful computing setups.

Elon Musk continues to escalate his artificial intelligence ambitions. On December 30, Musk announced that xAI had obtained a third structure for its rapidly expanding Colossus data center initiative, positioning the venture among the planet's largest AI training infrastructures.
The newly acquired facility, designated MACROHARDRR, complements the existing Colossus infrastructure in the Memphis region. According to The Information's reporting, which Bloomberg cited, this warehouse sits in the area near Southaven, Mississippi, outside Memphis proper.
Documentation of the property indicates it will function as an additional data center backing both Colossus and the adjacent Colossus 2 installation, which remains under development.
Musk has long positioned Colossus as fundamental to his vision of constructing humanity's most capable AI training apparatus. He stated earlier this year that Colossus 2 would ultimately contain roughly 550,000 Nvidia processors, requiring tens of billions of dollars to complete.
The acquisition of the third structure would elevate xAI's aggregate processing capability to approximately two gigawatts, ranking it among the most electricity-demanding AI operations globally, according to Musk.
Established in 2023, xAI functions as Musk's direct competitor to major AI organizations including OpenAI and Anthropic. The company's primary offering, the Grok conversational AI system, maintains deep integration with X and leverages live data feeds.
Through the third building acquisition and a trajectory toward multi-gigawatt computational resources, Musk demonstrates that xAI's commitment to massive-scale AI training shows no signs of decelerating, despite mounting concerns regarding expenses, electrical requirements, and environmental implications.
Powering the beast
Operating a two-gigawatt installation demands enormous electrical resources—sufficient to supply electricity to approximately 1.5 million American residences. To satisfy this requirement, xAI is constructing dedicated power generation systems, including a gas-fired electrical generation facility nearby to furnish continuous power.
The accelerated expansion has encountered opposition at the local level. Conservationists and area residents in Memphis and Southaven have voiced objections regarding the facility's substantial electrical appetite and atmospheric pollution from the gas-burning turbines.
To mitigate environmental consequences, particularly regarding water consumption for thermal management, xAI is proceeding with construction of a $80 million water treatment facility. The installation will enable the organization to recycle roughly 13 million gallons of water daily, substantially decreasing dependence on municipal water sources.
The $200 billion valuation race
The substantial financial requirements of this undertaking are being sustained through vigorous capital acquisition efforts. During 2025, xAI has been pursuing an additional $20 billion through debt and equity arrangements, potentially positioning the organization's market value between $170 billion and $230 billion.
Musk's methodology emphasizes velocity regardless of expense. Unlike conventional large-scale data center projects requiring extended timelines, xAI has accomplished major construction phases within months, working to maintain Grok's standing relative to competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude.
