McDonald's commits $8.5B to technology overhaul and AI-driven restaurant modernization
The fast food giant is backing a decade-long spending plan to deploy generative AI systems, redesign locations and boost operational efficiency across its global franchise network.

McDonald's announced a 10-year, $8.5 billion capital commitment aimed at accelerating technology rollout, redesigning restaurant layouts and streamlining how its locations operate. The spending initiative sits within the broader McDonald's > Next strategy unveiled in June 2026, positioning the company to capture growth and productivity improvements across its franchise system.
The chain expects the investment to unlock operational gains that could yield roughly $100,000 in annual cash flow benefits per franchisee by scaling deployment of ArchIQ, its generative AI-powered drive-thru ordering platform. McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski stated: "McDonald's has the unmatched scale, customer insights, brand loyalty and operational capabilities to not only adapt to the next wave of change in our industry, but to turn it into an advantage."
Building on six years of modernization
The McDonald's > Next strategy builds upon groundwork laid by the Accelerating the Arches initiative, which began in 2020 and set the company on a path to overhaul its technology foundation. That effort resulted in unified technology platforms, a centralized enterprise data architecture and a single operating system spanning more than 46,000 restaurants worldwide.
The modernization work has already delivered measurable financial results. During the company's Q2 earnings call in August, Kempczinski told investors that systemwide sales have grown by roughly $40 billion and operating income has increased by more than $3 billion since the initiative launched.
Kempczinski outlined the scope of the consolidation effort during the August earnings call: "We're now close to having all our major markets on one app, one loyalty program, one pricing engine, one HR system and one finance system. This will drive cost savings, accelerate innovation, harden security and enhance stability."
Data and AI at scale
McDonald's is constructing a global data lake that will enable the company to extract greater value from AI applications across its operations. Kempczinski noted that this consolidated data infrastructure will support the next phase of technology-driven improvements.
ArchIQ, the company's AI-enabled drive-thru ordering system, rolled out to select locations earlier this year and is now slated for broader deployment as part of the $8.5 billion investment. Kempczinski highlighted the system's early performance: "In drive-thru, we've modernized operations and invested in technologies that have improved accuracy and reduced service times."
The company's push into AI-driven ordering follows a previous attempt at automated ordering in partnership with IBM, which McDonald's discontinued in June 2024.
