Cohere and Aleph Alpha finalize $20B merger, backed by Schwarz Group investment
Two enterprise AI startups have completed their merger agreement, combining Cohere's language models with Aleph Alpha's specialized algorithms under a combined $20 billion valuation.

Cohere Inc. and Aleph Alpha GmbH have executed a merger agreement, cementing plans initially disclosed in April. The two artificial intelligence companies announced at that time that Schwarz Group GmbH, a major German retailer, would commit €500 million (approximately $573 million) to fund the combined entity. Recent reporting from The Globe and Mail indicated that a Canadian government-backed consortium might contribute an additional $3 billion.
Cohere's enterprise focus and revenue
Cohere, headquartered in Toronto, builds artificial intelligence models aimed at enterprise customers. Its main offering centers on a suite of open-source large language models branded as Command. Beyond these foundational models, the company provides specialized algorithms designed for particular applications including translation and search functionality. The firm's latest addition, Parse, converts documents into structures suitable for processing by AI agents.
Revenue generation occurs through API access to its model portfolio. The company also operates an AI productivity tool named North. CNBC reported that Cohere generated $240 million in revenue during the previous year.
Cohere received a $7 billion valuation in September of last year. The entity resulting from the merger with Aleph Alpha is projected to command a $20 billion valuation, signaling investor confidence in substantial expansion potential from the combination.
Aleph Alpha's research and deployment capabilities
Aleph Alpha, based in Germany, specializes in compact language models serving enterprise and government clients. The organization's technical approach includes creating custom evaluation benchmarks to ensure algorithm performance meets requirements. Beyond model development, Aleph Alpha assists organizations with deployment and operational aspects of their AI systems.
The company pursues foundational research initiatives alongside its commercial operations. During the previous year, it released a library capable of improving LLM inference performance by a factor of two. More recently, the firm unveiled a methodology for reducing AI hallucinations within retrieval-augmented generation architectures.
Aleph Alpha has accumulated approximately $126 million through venture capital rounds. Schwarz Group ranks among its investors and will provide the $573 million investment supporting the merger.
Post-merger structure and partnership plans
Following regulatory approval, the merged organization will operate under Cohere's brand identity. The company will maintain headquarters in both Berlin and Toronto. Aleph Alpha's present location in Heidelberg, Germany will transition into an AI research facility.
Cohere has identified deepening collaboration with Schwarz Group as a key strategic objective for the combined business. The retailer operates STACKIT, a cloud division that provides infrastructure for AI applications and other workloads serving external clients. Last year, Schwarz Group announced intentions to invest €11 billion in constructing a data center capable of supporting up to 100,000 graphics processing units.
