Coca-Cola Deploys AI-Powered Ordering Tool to Guide Retailer Purchases Across Malaysia
Through its Coke Buddy platform, Coca-Cola is leveraging artificial intelligence to suggest both products and quantities that Malaysian retailers should order, analyzing historical purchasing data alongside seasonal and weather patterns.

Coca-Cola has integrated AI-driven recommendations into its Coke Buddy platform to help Malaysian retailers make smarter purchasing decisions. The Perfect Basket feature taps into Coca-Cola's Central Recommendation Engine, which examines prior purchase records, order cadence, seasonal variations, weather conditions, and buying behavior across comparable retail operations.
Across Malaysia, Coke Buddy serves roughly 39,000 retail locations. The platform functions as a self-ordering system enabling retailers to purchase goods via its mobile application, web interface, or WhatsApp, complete with tailored order recommendations and shipment visibility.
Perfect Basket enhances the existing ordering capabilities by proposing both items and quantities at the moment a retailer is preparing to finalize a purchase. The system presents these suggestions for review, but retailers maintain full authority over their final purchasing choices.
How Perfect Basket guides retailer orders
Coke Buddy previously relied on purchase history alone to surface products retailers were likely to reorder. Perfect Basket incorporates additional variables—including seasonal demand shifts, local weather impacts, ordering frequency patterns, and comparative purchasing trends from similar retailers.
The system generates product and quantity suggestions before retailers finalize their orders through Coke Buddy. Order fulfillment remains managed through Coca-Cola Refreshments Malaysia or its distribution partners via existing commercial arrangements.
Coca-Cola emphasized that field sales personnel continue collaborating with retailers alongside the automated ordering mechanism, while retailers retain the power to make ultimate purchasing determinations.
Adoption metrics emerged from Coca-Cola's Perfect Basket, Perfect Ride initiative, which operated from January through April 2026. This campaign sought to encourage retailers to leverage the recommendation system when submitting orders and attracted more than 4,500 submissions from over 4,000 Malaysian retailers.
Among campaign participants, 83% of outlets embraced Perfect Basket recommendations, according to Coca-Cola. This percentage reflects only the retailers engaged in the campaign itself, not the complete network of approximately 39,000 locations using Coke Buddy.
Coca-Cola reported that participating outlets which followed the system's recommendations experienced greater sales revenue expansion relative to comparable retail operations. However, the company withheld specifics regarding the magnitude of this increase and did not release granular performance metrics demonstrating how individual recommendations influenced sales outcomes or stock management.
The Malaysian campaign information lacks data on prediction accuracy, product availability, inventory metrics, or distribution expenses.
Suggested orders extend beyond Malaysia
Comparable recommendation capabilities have been rolled out by Coca-Cola throughout its broader bottling operations. In first-quarter 2024 results, Coca-Cola stated that it and its bottling partners had brought nearly eight million customers onto B2B digital platforms worldwide, while AI-powered suggested-order systems had expanded to more than three million retail locations in Latin America.
These platforms integrate customer information, third-party data sources, and machine learning to create predictive ordering suggestions. In 2024, then-chief executive James Quincey noted that digital ordering platforms enable retailers to modify shipment schedules without requiring in-person visits from sales staff.
Coca-Cola has connected suggested-order functionality to shifts in how it manages its sales operations. Quincey explained that AI-generated orders free up pre-sales personnel from routine order-taking activities, allowing them to concentrate on relationship-building and account expansion, while retailers maintain decision-making authority over their purchases.
Earlier recommendation system pilots produced measurable results that Coca-Cola has disclosed. During its second-quarter 2024 earnings presentation, the company indicated that retailers given AI-generated product suggestions derived from historical orders and market intelligence were more than 30% more inclined to purchase the suggested SKUs in initial tests. These findings did not pertain specifically to the Malaysian Perfect Basket deployment.
In a separate initiative focused on demand forecasting, Coca-Cola merged historical sales figures with meteorological and geographic data to create replenishment guidance. CIO Neeraj Tolmare shared with Fortune in 2025 that a pilot spanning three countries achieved sales 7% to 8% higher than locations not employing the AI system.
Perfect Basket continues operating following the campaign's conclusion. Coca-Cola indicated its intention to expand Coke Buddy and the recommendation capability by incorporating retailer input and operational data, while maintaining retailers' ongoing access to company sales representatives in tandem with the digital ordering infrastructure.
